Pregnancy care at our polyclinic
Pregnancy care. Your period is late, you feel nauseous, you often vomit, your breasts are painfully sensitive and swollen and you keep running to the toilet. You go to the pharmacy for a pregnancy test. Are you pregnant?
Diagnosing pregnancy
The only reliable "diagnosis" of a normal pregnancy is made by an ultrasound examination supported by laboratory analyses, which answers the following questions:
- Are you pregnant?
- Is the fetus in the uterus?
- Is there fetal heart activity? (if fetal heart activity is not heard at the first examination, the examination must be repeated until the heart sounds are heard)
- How old is the pregnancy, i.e. what is the gestational week (GW)?
- When is the due date?
What will you learn at your first gynecological examination?
After taking your medical history (family and personal illnesses - including drug allergies, past infectious diseases, diabetes, thyroid gland, blood pressure, body weight, previous births and miscarriages...), the doctor will assess whether your pregnancy is a normal (physiological) pregnancy or a high-risk one that requires increased monitoring. The doctor will give you advice on how to reduce the usual pregnancy complaints: nausea and vomiting, heartburn, hemorrhoids and constipation, varicose veins. You will also receive recommendations on what your diet, physical activity, sexual behavior, use of medication and travel possibilities should be. The doctor will also assess your ability to work.
What can be seen on an ultrasound examination?
The ultrasound examination assesses the age and vitality of the pregnancy, observes the appearance of the baby and how it is progressing. Thanks to the ultrasound, it is also possible to see the baby's movements. Incidentally, the fetal heart beats extremely quickly - about 160-170 beats per minute.
