Holter BP (Holter monitoring of blood pressure) is a non-invasive diagnostic method by which blood pressure is continuously monitored over 24 hours or a longer period under the patient's usual living conditions. This examination allows for a more precise assessment of changes in blood pressure during the day and night, the detection of hidden forms of hypertension, as well as the monitoring of the effects of therapy for the regulation of blood pressure.
What is Holter TA?
The BP Holter (arterial blood pressure Holter) is a modern, non-invasive diagnostic method in which blood pressure is automatically measured and recorded over a longer period of time, most often 24 hours. During the examination the patient wears a small portable device that measures blood pressure at certain time intervals during everyday activities, work, rest and sleep.
Unlike classic measurement of blood pressure in the doctor's office, the BP Holter gives the physician insight into the actual blood pressure values throughout the day and night, as well as into its changes in different situations.
This examination is used for:
- diagnosing elevated blood pressure (hypertension),
- detecting changes in blood pressure that are not registered during an ordinary examination,
- assessing nighttime blood pressure values,
- monitoring the effectiveness of therapy for regulating blood pressure,
- assessing the risk of complications associated with blood pressure disorders.
The BP Holter is a painless examination and does not require special preparation. After the measurement is completed, the physician analyzes the obtained results and provides recommendations for further monitoring or treatment.

Symptoms
High blood pressure can often go without pronounced symptoms, which is why it is also called the „silent killer“. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (Holter TA) is recommended when there is a need for precise monitoring of blood pressure values during everyday activities and rest.
The most common symptoms and reasons for performing a Holter TA examination include:
- frequent headaches, especially in the back of the head,
- dizziness and a feeling of instability,
- ringing in the ears,
- heart pounding and a rapid heartbeat,
- a feeling of pressure or discomfort in the chest,
- tiredness and weakness,
- blurred vision,
- sudden changes in blood pressure,
- suspected hypertension or insufficiently regulated blood pressure,
- monitoring the effects of therapy for high blood pressure.
Holter TA allows the doctor to see how blood pressure behaves throughout the entire day and night and, based on the results obtained, to make a decision on further monitoring or adjustment of therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Holter BP is a diagnostic method in which blood pressure is continuously measured and recorded over 24 hours or a longer period, under the conditions of the patient's everyday life.
The examination is recommended when high blood pressure is suspected, in cases of large fluctuations in pressure, to assess the effectiveness of therapy, as well as for symptoms such as headache, dizziness, heart palpitations, or fatigue.
A cuff is placed on the patient's upper arm, connected to a small portable device that automatically measures blood pressure at certain time intervals during the day and night.
It is most often worn for 24 hours, and as recommended by the doctor it can be used for longer, depending on the need to monitor blood pressure.
No. The examination is painless and safe. During the automatic measurement, the patient may feel a brief pressure from the cuff on the arm.
Yes. It is recommended that the patient carry out their usual activities so that the results reflect the changes in blood pressure throughout the day as realistically as possible.
Special preparation is generally not required. Before the device is placed, the patient receives the doctor's instructions on how to wear the device and how to behave during the examination.
Yes. The device is intended to be worn throughout the entire monitoring period, including sleep time, so that the doctor has insight into the nighttime blood pressure values.
The examination allows for the assessment of average blood pressure values, daytime and nighttime changes, as well as an assessment of whether the therapy for regulating pressure is appropriate.
After the device is removed, the doctor analyzes the recorded data and, based on the results, provides an expert opinion and recommendations for further monitoring or treatment.
