Pregnancy Care in Belgrade
Your period is late, you feel nauseous, and your breasts are tender and swollen. These are signs that often first lead you to think you may be pregnant. A home pregnancy test provides the first indication, but true confirmation and a reliable diagnosis are obtained only through an ultrasound examination by a gynecologist. In the following text, we explain how pregnancy is confirmed, what to expect during the first examination, what regular monitoring throughout the nine months looks like, and what pregnancy care at our Polyclinic includes.
Pregnancy Diagnosis
The only reliable way to diagnose a normal pregnancy is through an ultrasound examination along with laboratory tests. These determine:
-
whether a pregnancy is present,
-
the position of the fetus in the uterus,
-
fetal heart activity (if the heartbeat cannot be detected during the first examination, the examination is repeated until the heartbeat can be heard),
-
the gestational age, i.e., the week of pregnancy (GW),
-
the expected due date.
First Gynecological Examination During Pregnancy
The first examination begins with a conversation (medical history). The doctor collects information about family and personal medical history, including allergies to medications, previous infectious diseases, diabetes, thyroid disorders, blood pressure, body weight, previous deliveries, and miscarriages. Based on this information, the doctor assesses whether the pregnancy is normal (physiological) or high-risk, requiring closer monitoring.
The doctor also provides advice on how to alleviate common pregnancy symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, heartburn, hemorrhoids and constipation, and varicose veins. You will also receive recommendations regarding diet, physical activity, sexual activity, medication use, and the possibility of traveling. The doctor also assesses your ability to work.
Ultrasound Examination During Pregnancy
Ultrasound is used to assess the gestational age and viability of the pregnancy, the baby's appearance, and its development. The baby's movements can also be observed. The fetal heart beats extremely quickly, at around 160 to 170 beats per minute.
Pregnancy Monitoring Process
A gynecological examination includes an ultrasound and, when necessary, colposcopy, a Pap test, and cervical and vaginal swabs. Laboratory tests may also be performed, including a complete blood count, iron, urinalysis, blood glucose, urea, creatinine, AST, ALT, total protein, and blood type with Rh factor. During pregnancy, it is necessary to visit a gynecologist at least once a month.
Pregnancy monitoring is a standard service at our Polyclinic. Regular prenatal examinations are extremely important for monitoring the baby's growth and development, the health of the pregnant woman, and the timely diagnosis of any conditions that may occur during pregnancy.

It is recommended to have a gynecological examination at least once a year.
